Brief History

The Limbe City Council building
Councils were born in Cameroon during the German Colonial days, when they faced rivalry from other colonial nations, Britain and France. The Germans were forced to act by creating administrative units in Victoria (then) headed by an Officer assisted by a council of six other members under British Trusteeship in 1951, there was the Native Authority. Southern Cameroon was the six admin units with various headquarters in the divisions. Victoria formed one of these . The Councils were democratically elected and had permanent staff.
There were replaced in 1961 by local councils headed by a Chairman assisted by an executive committee. There were electoral lists and elected municipal Councilors. There were administrative secretaries supervised by Divisional Officers of the area to run administrative machinery. After the National Assembly deliberation and adoption of law on councils. Law No. 74-23 of 5/12/74 organizing councils was born.
Defining councils as “a decentralized public authority having the status of a corporate body under Public law with legal personality and financial authority, to secure the economic, social and cultural development of its population.
There were two forms rural and urban. They served as local extension of the state.
In decree No. 93/322 of 21/11/93 certain urban councils became Special Status Councils administered appointed Government Delegates and not elected Mayors.
Limbe Urban Council was born. And the Government Delegate executes the rules and policies defined by the council headed by a chairman.
On 17 January 2008 by decree, this was changed to Limbe City Council. Its present status and appellation , with three sub divisional councils created.
Limbe I (POH) Council, Limbe II Mukundange Council,
Limbe III-Bimbia Council, each administered by a Mayor and 2 deputies.
The Limbe City Council

The boundaries of the Limbe City Council are as follows:
- To the East with Tiko Rural Council up to Ombe River Bridge.
- To the North by the Moliwe CDC Camp.
- To the West by Batoke Beach, Mile 8.
- To the South West by Kange Fishing Port.
- To the South by the Atlantic Ocean.
Limbe has a population of over 120,000 inhabitants. In May 2007, a Presidential Decree created three new Councils in Limbe; Limbe I, Limbe II and Limbe III, each headed by a Mayor and 2 deputies.

With headquarters in Down beach, Limbe I Council oversees the development of Limbe Central. The present Mayor is Mr. Matute Daniel, First Deputy mayor of the council is Mr. Mbua Ro-odany and Second Deputy mayor of the council is Madam Ndongo Beatrice. Three are 25 Councilors.

With headquarters in Mokundange, Limbe II Council oversees development of the West Coast area. The present Mayor is Mr. Duncan Molindo, First Deputy Mr. Molongo Francis and Second Deputy Mrs. Nkono. There are 25 Councilors. This is a strategic area with the presence of companies like SONARA, Ship Yard and Electricity Thermal Plant.

With headquarters in Bimbia, Limbe III Council oversees development of the East Coast area. The Present and very first Mayor is Mr. Mokate Samuel, First Deputy is Mr. Dalle IIongo Isaac and Second Deputy is Madam Martha Limunga Eliva. There are 25 Councilors. Fishing is their Primary activity in the area.
